Willow stood, ready for attack at any moment. She didn't know much about where she was, other than others were here, but further away. She looked around, pawing at the sand a little as she looked over her surroundings.
It was beautiful here- the ocean spread in front of her, sand and water meeting to create a soft song. The moon was close to the earth here, making Willow feel peaceful, yet almost like mourning.
Without realizing it, Willow walked forward, her eyes on the orb of light before her, until her front paws touched the cool water. She didn't know what she was looking for, or why she was here, but it didn't matter in that moment. She felt closer to her family then, the family she didn't know, and the older she-wolf that had saved her. It was almost like.. She could feel them..
Sighing, Willow shook her head. This was nonsense. They were dead, she was alive- there was no changing that. This place, though enchanting, was only fooling her with thoughts of them, trying to break her. She wouldn't let it, she decided, giving a small growl.
Turning, she began to walk back to her spot from before- just up a small hill formed of sand. It was a good place to watch the great water as it reflected the moon. She sat now, the sight before her able to relax her, and watched, smiling at the rabbit she saw on the moon.
There once was a great Spirit that sat atop the moon, watching over its children as they went about their lives.
One day, the Spirit smiled, deciding to come visit, and to see which of his children were the purest of heart. The great Spirit flew to the earth, then began his search for three of his children that lived together, in harmony. Surely, he thought, the three of them would be purest.
It didn't take long for the Spirit to find the three young animals. Before they saw him, he took the shape of an old, silver wolf. The three others, a fox, a coyote, and a rabbit, saw the wolf, and welcomed him.
"You must be hungry," said the fox.
"We will gather you food," said the coyote.
The rabbit said nothing, instead following the others to find the elder wolf some food.
After a while, the fox returned, bearing many berries. "I have found you the finest berries of our land," said the fox, laying them out before the wolf. The fox smiled, obviously pleased with himself.
A little while later, the coyote appeared, dragging the carcass of a dead fawn. "I have brought you the finest fawn I could find," He said, smiling as he laid it beside the fox's berries. He was pleased with his bounty, as the fox was.
The wolf smiled at the fox and the coyote, but waited for the rabbit.
Finally, the rabbit came out of the underbrush, and approached the old wolf. "I was not able to find you any good berries- only poisoned ones. I was not able to down a fawn. I did not find you anything worth eating. So, take me as your meal," the rabbit said, her voice soft, yet firm as she spoke the last.
The wolf smiled, turning back into his true Spirit form.
"Fox," he said, looking at the fox. "Your berries were poisoned. You cared more of how I saw you than of what you brought." He said, shaking his head. The fox ran.
"Coyote," he said, looking to the coyote. "Your fawn is ill, and would have made me sick. You cared about having the biggest kill more than of my health." He said, shaking his head. The coyote ran.
"But you, rabbit," he said, his voice soft, "You cared so much as to offer yourself instead. Return with me, and you will be happy forever." The Spirit said, smiling as the rabbit agreed.
Taking the rabbit with him, the Spirit put him on the moon, for all this other children to see, so they would remember to be pure of heart.
Willow smiled fondly as she came to the end of her tale. The older she-wolf that had raised her had told her that story many times when she was a pup. Sighing softly, Willow lay down, resting her head on her paws as she looked up at the rabbit on the moon.
