Echo: Good things come to those who are patient. Enough.
Dyna: Stick your nose in my face and I'll be glad to change your appearance.
'Are we there yet?' came the voice, asking the age-old question, sliding its way into the female's mind for the hundredth time. And for the hundredth time came the audible answer. "Not yet. Soon, though."
Dyna was doing this on purpose. She was bored, and antagonizing Echo was her most favorite way to pass the time. Yes, Echo was her wolf, and she was indeed fond of her, but really. Badgers weren't meant to walk long distances day after day, and walk was all Echo seemed to want to do. At least she was keeping her pace slow, allowing Dyna to keep up without too much effort. On the other paw, she wasn't reacting like Dyna wanted. Each time she asked, the question was met with quiet acceptance and a calm reply. Like each time was the first time Dyna asked, instead of the hundredth.
Naturally bad-tempered, this was grating on Dyna's nerves even more. What was wrong with the wolf? She wasn't normal. Any other wolf would have snapped by now. Why wasn't she? 'Are we there yet?'
"Not yet. Soon though."
Dyna stopped dead. "You keep saying that. You've been saying that for days. Just how skewed is your sense of time? How long does soon mean to you?" A mark of how annoyed she was getting. Dyna hardly ever spoke out loud unless she was getting frustated. Speaking out loud allowed her to hit volumes she couldn't speaking through their link.
Echo turned to face her, a grin on her lips. Dyna went stiff-legged, suddenly understanding. Just as she had been trying to irritate Echo, so Echo had been trying to irritate Dyna. And Dyna, having the shorter temper, was sure to snap first. The badger snarled, leaping after Echo. Laughing, Echo sprang away.
"Stop running, Echo! I got something for you!" the badger roared. Echo called back, "No, thanks, I don't want it!"
"But I want you to have it! Call it a gift!"
And so it went. Just another day for Echo and her badger Opakti.
